Light Night 2011: Sideways in the Light with Simon Warner

As darkness draws across the city on Friday 7 October, creatures of Light Night will populate the streets in a city-wide art extravaganza. You can become a tourist and rediscover Leeds as an evening of extraordinary activities unfolds. From city streets, shopping arcades, museums, libraries, theatres and prison cells, there will be a magical mix of performances, exhibitions, installations and participation.

The Gallery will host a night of time travel and art. 'Sideways in the Light', Simon Warner's silhouette workshop, is a 'double-decker' event with activities inside and outside the Gallery. In the Gallery Simon will set up an Edwardian 'pantographer' studio for visitors who book places in advance.

Using replica equipment and a working pantograph, visitors will produce their own silhouette miniature, which they can take home in a special folder. The procedure, developed by eighteenth-century physiognomist Johann Caspar Lavater, will be explained and introduced to visitors by Simon, who has conducted extensive research into this unique art form.

In addition to the spectacle of the historic silhouette workshop, passers-by and visitors who have not booked a place will have the opportunity to create a 21st-century silhouette of themselves using a digital camera/screen set up just outside the Gallery. The images will be e-mailed to participants after the event.
