Our Arthurian Imagination: Medieval and Medievalism in Film and Television Talk by Paul Sturtevant, University of Leeds
Saturday, 5 February 2011, 3pm
The myths and legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are some of Britain's favourite stories. They have been popular ever since they were invented in the Middle Ages -- Aubrey Beardsley's visions of Arthur on display at the gallery is only one in a long string of adaptations. The tales of the Knights of the Round Table still inspire our imaginations, but are no longer limited to the printed page.
Today, Arthur's knights adventure across our screens on TV, in films and even video games. This is not your grandfather's Arthur: our contemporary retellings and reinventions of the tales always re-make the medieval heroes in our own image.
But what do we want from our valiant chivalric heroes today? Can the round table still exist in modern Britain? And how have we made Arthur, our once and future king, an ideal for our time?
Free event, no booking necessary.
