Festivals and Events
At last month's Visual Arts Framework discussion event one table discussed possible options for visual arts festivals and events in Leeds. These are the notes made from their discussion..
Talking about how Leeds might ‘raise its ceiling’. There should be a greater interest in the particular qualities of art in Leeds. This could be achieved by an annual event that garners international (and as such national) interest.
The event shouldn’t replicate other cities but instead be original, play on the strengths of what already exists and, to an extent be obvious. A suggestion would be a festival of curating; a festival that unpicks what curating is. A proposal would be to use a tower block and give a floor each of the ten floors to a curator (with and additional two for a restaurant and a bar). There might be 10 curators from all around the world. It would demonstrate that Leeds has an engagement with the art world that the rest of the world doesn’t recognise. The festival would also allow for debate about curating, potentially using an on-line forum. Each curator might bring in top artists; the reverberation of which would filter through to other elements in Leeds
Do you think this would be a good idea for Leeds? How might we make it happen? What other options or ideas might there be?
