Lack of gallery space.
When people were asked at last months Leeds Visual Art Framework discussion event about negative things about Leeds visual art scene many people commented on the lack of gallery space. Comments included,
few independent spaces
lack of cheap industrial units for studios / galleries - they get knocked down or gentrified
lack of designated subsidised space
lack of galleries and exhibition space
Lack of gallery space
lack of space for emerging artists to show work
lack of venues to exhibit
Leeds art gallery massively under resourced - should be a hub
Leeds art gallery need full time sponsorship team
Leeds art gallery needs high profile internationally acknowledged director
Leeds art gallery needs more temporary gallery space
Leeds MET gallery's vanished
limited encouragement to artists (studios, temporary venues, etc.)
limited opportunities to see digital arts
loss of Leeds MET gallery's building
no central place to meet
no central social hub
no commercial galleries
no great galleries
no large scale venue for visual arts
no major platform for cutting edge practice
no nice arts cafe
no spaces for emerging artists
not enough independent spaces / cafes / retailers
not enough small galleries to support a variety of visual approaches
not enough spaces for exhibiting
not many contemporary permanent artworks
poor public art and not much of it
resources
things becoming as hock - non permanent premises
too few independent artist led spaces / studios
Do you think this is true and if so how might it best be addressed?

I agree
Agree.
Firstly, it seems that we need something to get all the artists or the people who have common interests in art together to talk or hang out. Preferable face to face social. Whether it's a pub or arty cafe or just an informal society which can orgnize regular meeting or parties. so the information exchange might be more effective and vivid. I study art and design in Leeds but I do wish I can get to know more artists not only in University.
Secondly, I do wish there are more small/independent galleries or cafe here so the young/normal artists can have chances to show their work to public. Leeds Art Gallery is a great place but it's kinda like a commercial gallery and too formal. It's like people hold their breath to adore the works. We want some places where people can chat ,drink, have fun and know friends. That would be better
