miniciné at armley mills is a monthly takeover of the reclaimed Palace Picturehouse which resides inside Armley Mills Leeds Industrial Museum.

next screening Thursday 16 September:

Sonata For Hitler // Dir Aleksandr Sokurov / 10 mins / 1989

A series of archived WWII images set to a musical backdrop of Bach and Penderecki. Sokurov's Sonata For Hitler was banned in the Soviet Union for many years due to it's alleged anti communist sentiment.

The film builds a psychological profile of both side's victims and perpetrators in the aftermath of the war.

Double Take // Dir Johan Grimonprez / 80 mins / 2009

A tale of intrigue, personal paranoia and deception, Double Take uses archive footage and Hitchcock’s own sardonic wit to explore the director’s preoccupation with doubles – a recurring theme in his films – to virtuoso and entertaining effect. Positioned against the backdrop of the Cold War best-selling British author Tom McCarthy writes a plot to mirror the political intrigue in which Hitchcock and his elusive double increasingly obsess over the perfect murder of each other.

Taking inspiration from a Jorge Luis Borge short story, this war between doubles is moved to the cultural tensions of the late 50s and early 60s and Hitch himself.

Film starts 7pm. £4 admittance, advance tickets available to purchase online or from Jumbo Records (St John's Centre, Leeds)
