'España es diferente': Visions of Spain under Franco - Talk by Rob J Miles
Saturday, 9 July 2011, 3-4pm
Taking in some of the context and cultural heritage of Carlos Nadal's work, Rob Miles will explore and contrast visions of Spain during the Franco regime. From the triumphalism of the post-Civil War years to the later ostensibly softened Francoism the panorama becomes enduringly, even officially sunny. The talk will offer challenging and disquieting insights into the culture and politics behind Carlos Nadal's sun-filled, colourful works.
Dr Miles teaches at the University of Hull. His research interests include theories of influence and trauma, modernity and cultural memory, especially representations of the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, the experience of exile and Spain under Franco in art and film.
Free event, no booking necessary. All welcome.
