"Members of the public and Leeds arts community are invited to attend a meeting to discuss the Artists Taking the Lead project which was awarded to Canvas and formed Leeds’ contribution to the National Cultural Olympiad. The Canvas bid comprised a consortium of Leeds’ most powerful arts organisations, public sector bodies and academic institutions, and came to fruition as the OverWorlds & UnderWorlds exhibition/installation in the Dark Arches, on Briggate, and in the County Arcade/Victoria Quarter.
The meet
ing will look at questions raised as to whether guidelines set by Arts Council England were broken in the awarding of the £.5 million contract to Canvas, whether sufficient disclosure of personal interest was given by members of the voluntary panel which made the decision to award the contract to Canvas, and whether conflicting interests on the panel made it impossible for a truly impartial decision to ever have been made.
The meeting will consider whether and what action members of the public and artists might choose to take in the interests of ensuring impartiality and accountability in the delivery of arts which are funded/subsidised by the public purse."
