Private View of the new 'The Sadler Gift' exhibition
Tuesday, 6 September 2011, 6-8pm.
All welcome.
2011 marks the centenary of visionary Vice-Chancellor Sir Michael Sadler, who came to the University of Leeds in 1911. The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery celebrates his cultural legacy to the University and the city of Leeds with a new exhibition ‘The Sadler Gift’ which runs from 6 September until 17 December 2011. The exhibition highlights Sadler’s pivotal role in the development of the University Art Collection as well as his wider importance to British Art of the early 20th century.
The Gallery is open from Mon-Sat, 10-5pm and admission is free.
A complementary exhibition based on Sadler’s gift of Kashmir Shawls will be on display at the University of Leeds International Textiles Archive (ULITA) from 13 September to 30 March 2012, Tues-Fri, 9:30-4:30pm, also admission free.
The Gallery exhibition will be accompanied by a full-colour catalogue of the entire Sadler Gift, edited by Dr. Hilary Diaper, former Keeper of the Gallery, which will be available for sale from the Gallery shop later this month.
The exhibitions will also be complemented by a diverse programme of related events, including the popular Burton Saturdays, free creative activities suitable for all ages. Full event details can be found on the gallery website: www.leeds.ac.uk/gallery/events.htm.
