The Colours of Black: Line Illustration in Japanese Woodblock Printed Books

An illustrated lecture by Ellis Tinios, Honorary Lecturer in History, University of Leeds

In the Edo period (1615-1868), artists of all the major Japanese schools of painting created designs expressly for publication in book form. These 'books of illustrations' represent a remarkable achievement in terms of their technical perfection, broad range of styles, subject matter, and beauty. This lecture will focus on books with line illustrations that would have been known to Aubrey Beardsley and his contemporaries.

Free event, no booking necessary.
