On Saturday 7th September, Wakefield-based artist Richard William Wheater will be creating ‘Trees and Scooters’ – a procession of scooters through Wakefield city centre, each flying a huge flag with the image of a different tree. A moving ‘woodland’ of scooters will parade along a defined route through the city centre and end at The Orangery on Back Lane, where all the flags will be symbolically ‘planted’ in the garden of the Grade II* listed site.

The route kicks off at Sandal Castle at 12 noon, moves swiftly on to The Hepworth Wakefield, then through Eastmoor, St Johns, Thornes and Westgate. It arrives at The Orangery at about 12:40 - depending on traffic!

The event, commissioned by creative company Beam, marks the start of ‘Amazing Streets and Spaces’, a season of artistic events and interventions in Wakefield city centre between September and December. The ‘Amazing Streets and Spaces’ programme includes work by Faceless, the Art House, the 154 Collective, Revive Urban Arts, Spanish artists Boa Mistura, and Wakefield College students.

Wheater is working with the city’s ‘Dirty Mills Scooter Club’ to pull off what promises to be a stunning visual spectacle.
