Eye of the Needle – Forgotten Everyday Sewing Skills
Inspired by the lovely ladies in John Currie’s Seamstresses, the Gallery’s candidate for Yorkshire’s Favourite Paintings, we are delighted to host a hands-on workshop where you can learn or practice forgotten, but ever-so-useful domestic skills under the expert guidance of Margaret Chalmers.
Following a short introduction to the painting, no secrets of basic stitching, buttonholes and embroidery shall remain hidden – all this amidst needles, threads, ribbons and charming original turn-of–the-century sewing samplers!
This session is suitable for beginners and advanced stitchers, as well as anyone interested in the history and lost art of hand sewing and needlework. You can bring your own project to work on, learn and practice, or start something new!
Margaret Chalmers works for the University of Leeds International Textile Archive.
Free workshop, but places are limited so please book your place in advance by e-mailing Zsuzsa at libzmp@leeds.ac.uk, phone (0113) 34 32777, or online at http://eyeoftheneedle.eventbrite.com.
