MANY HANDS MAKE MERRI(ON) CHANGES
An Art Exhibition by Young Leeds Artists Celebrating Redevelopment and Regeneration in Leeds Located in the Merrion Centre

Leeds is changing all around us. Development is occurring all over the town aiming to become a leading Northern city. An artist’s group called Young Leeds Artists, comprising of five Fine Art Leeds University students, Laura Feltham, Katie Iveson, Jessica McLaughlin, Ali Noble and Ella Sergeant, have taken this as their theme for an exhibition called “MANY HANDS MAKE MERRI(ON) CHANGES”. Set in the former Craftwise unit in Merrion Market, inside the Merrion Centre, the opening night is Thursday the 3rd of May 5-7pm and the exhibition runs from the 3rd-10th of May, open 9am-5pm.

“We knew the Merrion Market was vacant and all fell in love with the old Craftwise unit, so after we contacted the Merrion Centre and they gave us the go ahead, we wanted a theme for the exhibition that related to the space” said Katie Iveson, one of the Young Leeds Artists. Refurbishment is set to be completed in the Merrion Market in Spring 2013 leaving most of its units empty and unused. The space provides an excellent setting to show work investigating the positive aspects of regeneration in our city.

The art work in the show ranges in a variety of media, from photography to drawing and painting, to kinetic sculpture and textile work. Each artist has chosen to focus on an interest within the redevelopment theme, providing a broad selection of work.

“MANY HANDS MAKE MERRI(ON) CHANGES” provides an opportunity to celebrate Leeds and the changes taking place within the city. Everyone is invited to go along, check out the art, and contemplate the changes going on around them and what this will mean for our city’s future.
