‘it’s a visceral, immersive experience’ The Guardian
Tuesday 14 – Saturday 25 February
Howard Assembly Room, Entrance via Leeds Grand Theatre
Mon – Sat, 2.00pm – 8.00pm
FREE
Part film, part theatre, part art installation: in Five Truths, acclaimed director Katie Mitchell presents five interpretations of one of Shakespeare’s most intriguing heroines: Ophelia from Hamlet. Come and experience this free installation in its first exhibition outside of London.
Katie Mitchell takes her inspiration from Europe’s most influential 20th century theatre directors: Brecht, Artaud, Broook, Grotowski and Stanislavski. Be transfixed as each Ophelia tells a different story with the same words. Oliver Award winning actor Michelle Terry is all of these Ophelias, at once quiet and introspective, wild and untamed, detached and distant – each version is true, while at the same time contradicting and challenging the other versions.
Which moves you the most? Which do you recognise? Which Ophelia are you closest to?
Five Truths has been created for the V&A in association with the National Theatre. With video designer Leo Warner, set designer Vicki Mortimer, lighting designer Paule Constable and sound designer Gareth Fry.
