Light Night: 'Temporal searchlight’, by Rupert Clamp and Carl Allport, Leeds Kirkgate Market central entrance, 6:30pm onwards

A searchlight reveals segments of archive photographs of the area around Leeds Kirkgate Market. Images culled from Victorian, Edwardian and Wartime Leeds overlap and burn through to the present, with the market and the viewer becoming a bridge between the two.

We are history, and the past is ourselves; the projected images of historical figures show that although they may be recognisably different in dress, they have the same concerns and interests as we do. Everyone is involved in creating the identity of a city, and in turn we are determined by it. The past is another country, but they're really not so different over there.

Leeds Kirkgate Market, central Entrance (opposite Cooperative Bank), runs throughout the night.
