ATTACK SPACE DECAY TIME

For his new show ‘Attack Space Decay Time’ Fell extends his recent work with
geometry, time and sound using a process called ‘convolution’ to combine
acoustic fingerprints of actual spaces with real-time sonification of mathematical
functions. Over the past year Fell has collected impulse responses from hidden,
underground and utility spaces. In addition to his recordings, several notable
artists—including Florian Hecker and Christophe Charles—have submitted
impulses from around the world for this project. An impulse response refers to
the reaction of any dynamic system in response to some external change; it
describes the reaction of the system as a function of time. However, an ideal
impulse is a mathematical construct and cannot exist in reality, as it would have to
be infinitesimally narrow in time.

Fell (born 1966, Rotherham) works with digital sound synthesis, computer
controlled light and spatial geometry, bringing together interests in mathematics,
the psychopathology of time, multimodal perception and ethnographic analyses of
death. He has performed and exhibited extensively at major international festivals
and institutions including Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek (Montreal), Siggraph (Los
Angeles), The Powerhouse (Sydney), the International Symposium on Electronic
Art (Paris) and The Barbican (London). In December 2010 he released two linked
studio albums—‘Multistablity’ and ‘UL8’—to critical and popular acclaim with
listings in many end of year charts. Uncut magazine referred to these works as
“completely mindblowing”. Fell's recorded works are currently available on Raster
Noton (Chemnitz), Alku (Barcelona) and Editions Mego (Vienna), and are
