Not enough infrastructure and/or support!
At the Visual Arts Framework discussion event there were a lot of comments regarding the lack of support and infrastructure in Leeds' visual art scene including..
concrete ceiling
cultural policy doesn’t reflect activity
disjointed activity
event based (positive) but hard for those outside of the city to engage with it
fragmented visual arts community
L.A.G. Needs high profile
L.V.A.F. Can create inward looking-ness
L.V.A.F. Is great but there's no physical forum to discuss and meet
lack of arts champion
lack of coherent portal for city arts
lack of communication
lack of consultation and art policy
lack of development opportunities for artists
lack of infrastructure
lack of joined up thinking in statutory sector
lack of major visual arts festival
lack of opportunities for artists
lack of overall strategy
lack of support from city council
lack of vision - a tendency to ant to replicate the success of other cities
Leeds as a city doesn't support / prioritise contemporary art
Leeds sells itself on shops not on its art and culture where it has real strengths
no coherent vision / perspective
no joined up thinking in terms of project working
over-emphasis on reaching out - without truly believing in it - token gestures
poor infrastructure
private sector involvement
quite fragmented
state isn't proud of its artists - needs to learn from rest of Europe
support for freelance artists career development
there is a perception that the council isn't that interested in visual arts
too much reliance on bringing in international artists
top heavy arts infrastructure
understanding the spectrum of art for the city - who is it for
unrepresentative / ineffective arts policy
Would you agree and if so what is to be done about this?
